Alfie Jacques was a legendary lacrosse stick maker who dedicated his life to preserving the tradition of crafting wooden lacrosse sticks. Making a traditional lacrosse stick from a tree takes about 10 months. The complete process of making a traditional lacrosse stick involves cutting the trees, breaking them down into long pieces, drying them for around two months, making the old-style gut walls, bending the wood into shape, and stringing the sticks. Shagbark hickory is used to make wooden sticks, which must be cut, dried, and carved into shafts. These shafts are then dried for a month and steamed in between each bending process. A metal mold is used to form a scoop that will become the pocket and a second back bend just above the scoop, for the stick’s balance. The sticks are dried again before they are cut down to size, carved, seasoned, and ready to be netted.
